HAMM high-performance single-drum rollers of the 20 t class: More power, more options, more models
At bauma China 2016, Wirtgen China presents an enlarged program of HAMM single-drum rollers manufactured in Langfang. A new 22 t model, type 322, will complement the portfolio and will be on display for the first time in Shanghai. Moreover, all compactors will be available with smooth drum and padfoot drum. Accordingly, the range will encompass six models weighing 18 t, 20 t or 22 t. All of them will be equipped with a powerful 164 kW engine corresponding to the emission standard CN stage 3. They convince operators with high compaction rates and a large drum width of 2,220 mm. Moreover, there are several new options available, so customers can order machines that perfectly match their requirements. Owners benefit from competitive prices, low fuel consumption and low maintenance cost. The HAMM compactors can be used for a wide range of applications in stabilization and earthworks, compacting different types of material.
German-Chinese co-production made in Langfang
The HAMM single-drum compactors 318, 320 and 322 were developed exclusively for the Chinese market. Since 2014, the series has been produced in Wirtgen China’s Langfang factory. An engineering team from Germany and China tailored the compactors perfectly to the needs of the Chinese market, combined with numerous strong features that are typical of HAMM, such as the compact design, unique visibility, first-class handling and compaction performance. The resulting compactors stand out for their modern technology, high productivity and quality compaction. They offer German quality standards at a very attractive price-performance ratio. With the 2016 models, HAMM offers new options and further developments.
Ergonomic operator platform for higher productivity
For a high degree of comfort and safety, the HAMM compactors come with an ergonomically designed operator platform and operator seat for complete all-round visibility. Thus the operator has a clear and unrestricted view of all areas around the machine for more safety on the building site. Thanks to its wasp-waist design, the machine features unrivaled visibility particularly to the rear and of the tires and surroundings. The spacious platform provides ample legroom and allows individual adjustment of seat and steering wheel. From 2016 on, the 320 and 322 models will be equipped with a cabin as standard, including heating and air conditioning. The 318 model comes with a canopy as standard, but can be equipped with a cabin as well. The user-friendly operating panel features a clearly designed information display and intuitive operation with international symbols. Displays for engine RPM and drive speed are standard equipment for China, a compaction meter can optionally be added.
Reliable engine and unique cooling system
For exceptional compaction performance, all six machine models have a highly efficient Dongfeng Cummins engine type QSB 6.7 C220 on board. Its rated output is 164 kW. Fuel consumption is low as the engine belongs to the latest generation. Customers benefit from a well-established service network throughout China. An innovative cooling system – in which the cooling air is fed in from the rear part of the engine hood – provides for an optimized air supply, an increased lifespan of the power packs and a reduction in noise emissions.
Powerful drive system
The HAMM compactors are equipped with a 3-point articulated joint that offers outstanding driving and steering characteristics. Using 3 instead of 4 joints, the HAMM articulated joint is unique on the market. It guarantees unsurpassed directional stability and driving comfort. Even at full steering angle, the chassis design ensures homogeneous weight distribution on drum and wheels. Moreover, the compactors can effectively absorb impacts, also in uneven terrain. Tilting when driving along curves is no longer an issue, either.
The powerful drive system features an original Rexroth hydraulics system. A hydraulic flow divider is standard in all models – another unique feature for the Chinese market. It guarantees an excellent climbing ability via a self-locking differential: the HAMM compactors impress with their gradeability of up to 55% on soft soil. Their performance far exceeds that of any other single-drum roller made in China.
The Langfang-made HAMM compactors also stand out because they have an engine freely accessible from all sides. Thus the service is fast and uncomplicated. The hood folds to the rear and is hardly higher than the operator’s cab, which allows service work to be carried out in low areas or workshops with low ceilings as well. The backup lights of the machine light up the engine range, thus facilitating examination in any lighting conditions. Besides, thanks to the German-Chinese design including the usage of locally produced parts, customers benefit from fast and reliable spare parts and service support.
More drum options for wider application fields
The Chinese HAMM single-drum rollers can be equipped with a smooth drum or padfoot drum ("P" models) with vibration as standard configuration. Customers who need both types of drum can use the optional padfoot shell kit, consisting of three segments. It enables easy conversion of the smooth drum to a padfoot drum, making it ready to compact cohesive soil.
318 & 320 models successfully launched in Chinese market
The feedback for the 318 and 320 models, which have been available since the beginning of 2014, is very positive from all parts of the country. Several Chinese companies have already experienced the advantages of the rollers in various applications. One of the building sites concerned the construction of the new national expressway G7, leading from the capital city of Beijing to the Xinjiang province. There, the customer, Xinjiang Road & Bridge Construction Co. Ltd., compacted a 16 m wide and 32 cm thick cement-treated base course very efficiently with two HAMM single-drum rollers (type 320).
In general, the operators found the single-drum rollers very easy to handle and felt comfortable on the operator platform as it allowed them to individually adjust the seat, the steering column and the steering wheel.
Service engineers complimented HAMM on the ample space for easy access to all service points and that these points are arranged clearly, thereby helping to avoid common errors. Moreover, customers are happy with low fuel consumption and spare parts cost. For example, only 50 liters of hydraulic oil need to be replaced per year.
