Hamm HCQ Navigator: compact faster, better and more efficiently
Intelligent compaction (IC), also known as Continuous Compaction Control (CCC), is an evolving technology to maximize compaction performance using machines with an integrated measurement and navigation system. With the HCQ Navigator, Hamm AG, leading manufacturer of compaction machinery provides a complete system for intelligent compaction and documentation. At bauma China 2016, Hamm will present the latest version of this interesting tool, which helps to improve compaction quality and to reduce the number of passes. Bijie Highway Company is the first Chinese customer to use the system. They are impressed to see how easy it is to improve the compaction process in earthworks by means of the HCQ Navigator.
Modern, intelligent rollers and compactors can do far more than just compact. For example, they can determine exactly when and where compaction work is still needed. That is precisely what the HCQ Navigator from Hamm offers. It optimizes the compaction process technically and economically. It is sturdy in design and full of intelligent solutions. It can be integrated in any of the new Series 3000 Hamm compactors and in all other machines that are equipped with a Tier 3 engine.
Creation of a real-time compaction map
How does the HCQ Navigator work? During compaction, the system records various material and machine data. At the same time, a DGNSS receiver (GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite Systems, for example GPS) determines the position of the compactor. The HCQ Navigator correlates the process and positional information and presents it graphically on a panel PC in the operator’s cabin. Thus the HCQ Navigator creates a real-time compaction map.
Operators can follow the compaction progress in the form of colored maps. Additional information such as location maps or geo lines can be displayed for easier orientation. It is even possible to display two graphics next to each other (e.g. compaction increase and number of passes), as well as other details such as frequency or amplitude. The displays always remain clear and easily comprehensible.
More quality, less time
Using the HCQ Navigator, operators can work very efficiently because unnecessary passes are avoided. In addition, the compaction turns out to be very homogeneous and thus of high quality. This procedure helps to prevent any undercompacted areas with insufficient stiffness.
Successful introduction to China
The team at Bijie Highway Administration, the first Chinese user of the HCQ Navigator, found out very quickly that this innovation delivers more quality in less time. The first project for their new Hamm 3625 HT soil compactor with HCQ Navigator concerned cold recycling close to Bijie on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. On the X307 highway from Bijie to Nayong and on the S102 connection from Weining to Zhaotong, a 49 km long stretch with an average width of 6.5 m had to be compacted – a hilly, heavily traveled road with complex topography and tough geological conditions.
As the HCQ Navigator visualizes the compaction progress in real time, the operator, Zhou Jiansong, saw exactly where the ground had not been sufficiently compacted yet. He liked the system from the start, because “with the HCQ Navigator I always see which parts need more compaction or passes. Compacting these spots or areas, I can easily produce a very homogeneous surface.”
This first project already showed the huge benefit of the Hamm HCQ Navigator to the customer. Project Manager Yan Ging from Bijie Highway Engineering said: “With the HCQ Navigator, the compaction process is much more efficient. And we see another positive aspect: With this equipment we can avoid decompaction as well as undercompaction.”
Analyses of the compaction degree also showed that the Hamm compactor with HCQ Navigator has produced a high-quality compacted layer. Furthermore, much fewer passes and thus less time and less fuel were needed. This was confirmed by Mr. Huang, Director of Bijie Highway Administration: “By using Hamm compactors with HCQ Navigator, the compaction degree can be improved, with a 10-15% increase in pavement bearing capacity and service life. Compared to the traditional compaction process, the advantage of using the HCQ system is clear.”
On the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, a Hamm compactor with cabin was used. However, the sturdy, powerful panel PC complies with military standards, works within a temperature range from -40 to +70°C and is water- and vibration-resistant thanks to a closed, complete metal housing (IP65). It is therefore also suitable for machines with an open operating platform. The extremely sturdy DGNSS receiver is equally resistant to vibration. The device is attached to the roof using magnetic feet, making it easy and quick to install. Another big advantage: the DGNSS receiver and the panel PC can be swapped at will between compactors. This flexibility is unique.
Compaction network via Wi-Fi
When two or more compactors are working in a project, they can establish a network via Wi-Fi. In this case, the system determines the current status of compaction of the entire network in real time; for example, the system “knows” the number of passes completed by all the compactors, and displays the result on all panel PCs. In this way, every single driver is aware of the condition of the entire area to be compacted.
Hamm places high priority on intuitive operation, and the HCQ Navigator, too, fulfills this criterion: the system is easy to handle, and users quickly understand how to achieve better compaction results with it. As it is a plug-and-play solution, no configuration is necessary at the start of work. Even after a break or when a new shift begins, the HCQ Navigator provides a signal extremely quickly: after the machine is switched off, it retains the GNSS signal for up to 16 hours. This eliminates waiting times due to the system having to initialize again with satellites.
A great additional benefit for the construction site management is the simple documentation: with the HCQ Navigator, construction companies can monitor and document the progress and quality of their own work, because all data can be saved conveniently and archived easily via a USB interface. With this system, it is even possible to fulfill the requirements of Continuous Compaction Control (CCC) in earthworks with regard to compaction or stabilization in layers.
