HX Series – the New Flagship

Sustainable, intelligent and digitally supported: HAMM will be presenting a new generation of pivot-steered tandem rollers at CONEXPO/CON-AGG 2023: the HX series. They replace the previous DV+ series and they stand out through intuitive operation with Easy Drive, high performance data, many comfort features and sustainable operation. HAMM has also realized many detail improvements, new options and interfaces in the new HX series. All of the models are available in countries subject to the EPA Tier 4 exhaust emissions standard.

High precision

The HX series is the new flagship for the HAMM fleet. Designed for asphalt compaction, the HX 70i (17,000 lbs (7 t) / 55.4 kW) and HX 90i (19,842 lbs (9 t) / 74.4 kW) models achieve high surface outputs on large construction sites. What's more, they also impress in tasks such as compaction in curves with a high degree of precision. Here, the pivot steering shows its strengths with a large turning angle, large track offset and four different steering modes.

Intelligent drive control with automatic reversing

A component that ensures high compaction quality is intelligent drive control with automatic reversing. In combination with the electrically adjustable seat operating unit, it guarantees quality and comfort. It brakes and accelerates the rollers quickly, but smoothly as well. The seat also turns automatically in the direction of travel when reversing. This is unique in the market. It produces first-class surfaces whilst ensuring ergonomic safe working at all times.

Improved field of vision

New LED turning indicators and details around the cab give the HX series its distinctive design. The fully glazed panoramic cab offers a vastly improved field of vision with an excellent view of the drum edges. Light for drums and drum edges can be added as an additional option. A camera system with two robust displays (IP 67) are integrated as standard fittings to provide optimal vision. As the screens are separate views to the front and to the rear are always visible regardless of seat position. Still unique is the cab floor's glass window for seeing the drums. It can be folded in for cleaning.

Easy operation, ergonomic and comfortable thanks to Easy Drive

The Easy Drive operating concept combines an ergonomically optimized operator's platform with a well designed operating structure. Despite the extensive machine functions, the HX Series operation is easy to learn thanks for the language neutral and self explanatory features. Only the steering is performed with the steering wheel; all other important functions are operated via a joystick and the multifunction armrest. The armrest positions and the steering column’s tilt angle are adjustable. An ergonomic step allowing easy exit is included, with other options available includikng folding armrests and other comfort features such as 12V and USB sockets and many storage compartments.

New additive mixing unit, new chip spreaders

A revised dual-circuit additive mixing unit for the combination rollers saves water and increases the range, as the sprinkling system at the front and rear are controlled separately. Water and additive can be sprayed separately or as a mixture. HAMM has improved chip spreaders for the HX series in its range for spreading surface layers: the HLS 150 (201 gal / 760 l) and HLS 170 (254 gal / 960 l) line spreaders plus the HDS (198 gal / 750 l disc spreader, spreading width 315 in / 8m). All models have the option for height adjustment. An innovative lowering device is available as an option, which makes installation and removal possible without using a forklift truck or crane. The spreaders are operated from the operator's platform and are fitted with automatically rolling tarpaulins and integrated LED lighting.

Sustainable compaction, fuel savings

The engines work at a lower speed of 1500–2000 rpm, which reduces fuel consumption as well as noise and exhaust gas emissions. Here, powerful travel pumps ensure high compaction power. Furthermore, the automatic engine stop automatically switches the engine off after an extended period of inactivity. Finally, the rollers can be operated using diesel or HVO fuel.

Modern documentation, communications and maintenance solutions

Thanks to numerous interfaces and the corresponding hardware, the rollers in the HX series are prepared for future applications and challenges – be they quality, documentation or communication challenges. HAMM has developed the "Smart Doc" app for logging and monitoring the compaction progress. This means that even inexperienced drivers can immediately see which areas have been sufficiently compacted and which areas still need compaction. HAMM will be upgrading the app during 2023 with functions that will network the rollers on the construction site (M2M = machine-to-machine) and exchange data via a cloud (M2C = machine-to-cloud). The JD Link telematics systems is also on board in all models. It can also be used to call up the roller performance data, filling levels, error messages, operating hours or service intervals at any time and from anywhere.

Nine models and split drums

The HX series rollers are available with 17,000 lbs / 7t (HX 70i) and 19,842 lbs / 9 t (HX 90i) operating weights. Among the nine total versions are models with two vibrating roller drums, one oscillation and one vibrating roller drum as well as combi-rollers. The vibration and oscillation drums are designed as split or non-split drums, depending on the model.
