Frost Protection Layer

Preventing Frost Damage

The frost protection layer keeps water from rising into the pavement, and as a result, prevents frost damage to the surface layer. For this purpose, rock is crushed and sieved into graded aggregates, which are then laid and compacted. The graded, compacted aggregates ensure that the layer is sufficiently permeable to water and disrupts the soil’s capillarity.

Job Reports about Paving a Frost Protection Layer

To build the A1 freeway in Poland as efficiently as possible, machines from the Wirtgen Group were almost the only equipment used during paving and compaction, including several HAMM compactors and tandem rollers.

Because heavy goods traffic is set to grow to enormous proportions, the A1 highway needed a road surface designed to withstand heavy loads. A 20 cm thick gravel layer serves as frost protection.

The A1 highway in Poland received a particularly robust road bed. The first step was creating a stabilized sub-base 50 cm thick that that was compacted with padfoot drums.
