Bayerische Asphaltmischwerke is investing in energy-efficient, sustainable and economically viable future technology

With the commissioning of an RPP 3000 Plus, Bayerische Asphaltmischwerke is equipping its Luhe-Wildenau site to meet current industry challenges.

Bayerische Asphaltmischwerke (bam) has replaced its existing asphalt mixing plant in the Upper Palatinate region with astate-of-the-art Benninghoven RPP 3000 Plus plant with lateral loading silo. Thanks to its integrated hot gas generator technology, the asphalt mixing plant can achieve RAP feed rates of up to 100% – all while comfortably staying within emission limits. It also enables the production of reduced-temperature asphalt, also known as warm mix asphalt or low-temperature asphalt, through the use of surfactant additives and foam bitumen. Bam is using these sustainable solutions from Benninghoven, which help reduce the carbon footprint of asphalt production, to ensure the long-term viability of its Luhe-Wildenau site.

At Luhe-Wildenau, bam also relies on the latest (Benninghoven) plant control system BLS 4,

RPP-type asphalt mixing plants set the standard by combining maximum recycling, production flexibility and superior product quality. Thanks to hot gas generator technology, high RAP feed rates can be achieved even with frequent recipe changes – significantly reducing the carbon footprint of new asphalt mix production.

The optimised technology for handling RAP significantly reduces the need for fresh bitumen. Since bitumen production is particularly energy- and carbon-intensive, this lower usage leads to substantially reduced emissions in asphalt mix production. This makes the RPP a key contributor to energy savings and sustainable resource use.

Reduced-temperature asphalt: a key topic for the future

Another key innovation sets the asphalt mixing plant in the Upper Palatinate region apart: The plant's weighing and mixing section has been expanded with a foam bitumen module for producing reduced-temperature asphalt (warm mix/low-temperature asphalt).

The revised ZTV Asphalt-StB and TL Asphalt-StB standards are ushering in a fundamental shift for the industry. Starting with the 2026 construction season, it is recommended – and from 1 July 2027, mandatory – that rolled asphalt (hot mix asphalt) is produced and laid at significantly lower temperatures. This will establish warm mix (reduced temperature/low-temperature) asphalt as the standard construction method. Tests have shown that a temperature reduction of up to 40 °C is achievable without any loss of quality, and – alongside the requirements of the Arbeitsschutzgesetz (Occupational Health and Safety Act) – numerous ecological and economic factors support the industry’s new strategic direction.
