Pavement rehabilitation of a recycling centre

Wheeled paver reaches every angle

Manoeuvrable SUPER 1803-5 X impresses on complex surfaces

The “really tough guys” meet at a metal recycling centre in Brigachtal, Baden-Württemberg: the site is frequented daily by large machinery and heavy lorries. To renew the damaged asphalt surface, the contractor used the new Vögele paver SUPER 1803-5 X. The Dash 5 generation wheeled paver was able to demonstrate its strengths on the winding surface: precision with maximum manoeuvrability.

Formerly a scrap metal business, now one of the best-known trading companies in the non-ferrous metal industry in the Black Forest: the Scholz Metall yard is heavily used by heavy goods vehicles. The company therefore commissioned Karl Müller Tief- und Straßenbau from Niedereschach to renovate the 700 m² area. High-quality, two-layer asphalt should be laid – a 6 to 8 cm thick binder course and a 4 cm thick surface course – within one day. Marco Müller, third-generation managing director, opted for the new SUPER 1803-5 X wheeled paver from Vögele. With its high manoeuvrability and performance, the Universal Class paver is ideal for demanding and winding areas such as recycling centres.

First wheeled paver of the Dash 5 generation

The SUPER 1803-5 X is the first wheeled paver of the Dash 5 generation and was first presented at the Bauma 2025. It combines the advantages of a wheeled paver, high manoeuvrability and mobility during transport, with the advantages of the Dash 5 generation: greater ease of use, automated processes, shorter setup times and low noise and exhaust emissions. “The paver is impressively quiet and economical,” says Marco Müller. “This is a major advantage for our paving team and from a business perspective.” With paving widths ranging from 2.55 m to 8.25 m, it is also particularly versatile.

Paving around manhole covers

The complexity of the recycling centre presented the team with a challenge: The area has numerous corners and narrowings and is equipped with ten manhole covers. “The manoeuvrability of the wheeled machine played a major role in this job,” says Müller. Equipped with the steering brake Pivot Steer, the turning radius of the SUPER 1803-5 X can be reduced by more than 2 m. This made it possible to drive around the manhole covers without any problems. “It worked brilliantly with the machine – it even exceeded my expectations.”

“I have known Vögele since my childhood, and after the Dash 3, I thought: what could they do even better? But hats off, Vögele really pulled it off with the Dash 5 generation! The nice thing about the machine is that you immediately feel at home. The machine and our team worked perfectly.”

Quick to set up and easy to use

The clear and straightforward operating concept of the Vögele pavers was also helpful: “People immediately felt at home with the machine, and the operators were able to get started right away without much training,” says Müller. Compared to the Dash 3 variant, the ErgoPlus 5 operating concept offers a better overview, more comfort and storage options, improved ergonomics and an optional touch display for digital applications. Vögele has redesigned the shape of the steering wheel, which improves the overview and makes it easier to operate the function buttons.

New assistance and automatic functions simplify commissioning and certain installation functions, among other things, and minimise sources of error. This reduces setup times and increases quality and safety. Among other things, the optional Light Package Plus was used at the recycling centre: When paving under canopies and in poorly lit areas, the permanently integrated lighting could be activated as required without any installation effort.

Push-button tamper stroke adjustment

Müller also sees a major advantage in the further developed extending screed: The new generation AB 500 TV enables hydraulic tamper stroke adjustment. The Dual Power Shift Tamper enables operators to set the tamper stroke very easily at the touch of a button. Compared to mechanical adjustment, this saves a lot of time and is very practical, especially with changing layer thicknesses. “This is very helpful for us as a company with different construction sites,” says Müller. In combination with the tamper and vibration compacting systems, the screed achieved high precompaction and surface quality on the job site. As the surface of the recycling centre has to withstand heavy loads on a permanent basis, this was an important criteria.

The team at Karl Müller Tief- und Straßenbau is proud of their successful work – and their new “colleague” SUPER 1803-5 X.
