Learning by Doing

Trainees and instructors on a Wirtgen milling machine

The AZUBI techdays 2026

From May 20 to 22, around 80 highly motivated trainees from across the Wirtgen Group came together at Hamm AG in Tirschenreuth to independently realize their first real-life road construction project.

Staged every year, the Wirtgen Group AZUBI techdays are a special highlight for trainees in their third and fourth years of training and, at the same time, are an important investment in the future and the skill sets of our up and coming specialists. At the three-day event, the participants translate theory into practice and learn what it means to take on responsibility on a real-world project and work together successfully as a multi-brand team. The highlight of the event is a road construction project that the trainees carry out largely on their own, with only minimal support and advice from instructors and service technicians. Here, they not only learn how machines and products from different brands interact with one another, but also grow closer as a team. Core competencies such as teamwork, initiative, a sense of responsibility, and problem-solving skills are actively communicated and developed. The program is supplemented by fascinating workshops, informative factory tours, and machine demonstrations. There was also plenty of fun when the day’s work on the construction site was left behind: A varied evening program ensured that the three days would leave the young people with lasting memories that go far beyond the purely academic aspects of the event.

“At our AZUBI techdays, our young talents don't just get to know the machines and technologies in real-world construction site conditions. The approach we take also helps develop soft skills such as teamwork, personal initiative, and problem-solving abilities – core competencies that are also in enormous demand in the construction industry.”

Stefan Engl, Head of Vocational Training at Hamm

Step-by-Step to the Finished Project

TIRSCHENREUTH/Bavaria: Hamm hosted the AZUBI techdays 2026. Despite a global outlook, the compaction specialist has never forgotten its roots and is always pleased to contribute to community projects in the region. This is why the trainees are helping out at the local soccer club, ATSV Tirschenreuth, this year. Here, the ageing access road and the forecourt of the clubhouse was in urgent need of renovation – and our trainees were able show the skills they have learned. After all, training to be part of a winning team is not only essential on the football field, but also at the Wirtgen Group. The project was backed from the start by the club itself and a local civil engineering contractor and demonstrated an outstanding collaborative effort on the part of the trainees, these project partners, and the region.

Various machines from the Wirtgen Group were deployed on the approximately 980 m² site. The project kicked off with the W 120 Fi from Wirtgen. This machine milled off the old surface layer precisely and left a level surface for paving with the Vögele SUPER 1800-5 X road paver. After paving, the Hamm HD 14i, HD 10e, and HD 12e rollers ensured ideal compaction and a clean, high-quality finish. A total of 253 tonnes of asphalt mix was paved.

Day 1:

Precision Milling

On the first day, the focus was on the preparation of the surface for paving. The trainees carried out precise profile milling work with the Wirtgen W 120 Fi.

In the process, the existing surface was selectively removed to a depth of between 2 and 10 cm to create an ideal foundation for the new asphalt layer. The milled material was put to sustainable use and directly applied for bringing ancillary spaces up to the level of the new paved surface– a practical example of resource-efficient working in road construction.

Day 2:

State-of-the-Art Asphalt Paving in Action

On the agenda for the second day was the paving of the new asphalt surface base course. For this, the team used a Vögele SUPER 1800-5 X road paver in combination with an AB 600-5 TV paving screed.

The trainees laid down a 10 cm thick asphalt surface base course and were able to accompany and actively influence all steps of the process chain from material handling to paving and even distribution of the mix.

The trainees also experienced what kinds of logistical challenges can arise on a construction site: due to the narrow access road to the site, the asphalt mix had to be delivered exclusively with 4-axle trucks, which required particularly precise coordination on the construction site. In all, 14 loads of asphalt were paved.

Compaction:

Making Quality Visible

Several machines were used to ensure correct compaction, including the following tandem rollers: an HD 10e VV, an HD 12e VT, and an HD 14 VO.

Here, the trainees learned just how important correct compaction is for ensuring the quality and durability of an asphalt surface and that it is a key element of the overall process. This was an example of perfect interaction between teamwork and technology

“Up until now, I was only familiar with the machines from our own factory. Now I’m really looking forward to seeing them working together with the machines from our group’s other brands.”

Marco Buchmüller, trainee from Wirtgen

We Win Together

For three days, the up and coming specialists worked hand in hand, but it was about more than just the construction process. The AZUBI techdays are also a platform on which young talents from the Wirtgen, Vögele, Hamm, Kleemann, and Benninghoven brands come together, learn from each other, and get the opportunity to widen their horizons. The goal is also to deepen understanding of how the products from these specialized brands complement each other perfectly in construction projects to achieve the best possible results, and how decisive cross-brand teamwork is for providing end-to-end services to customers.

“It’s amazing that we got so much done in such a short time. And the best thing is that we don’t just stand by and watch, we get the chance to operate the big machines ourselves. That’s great!”

Celine Hoffmann, trainee from Vögele

“My personal highlight was getting to the chance to operate a Hamm roller – it’s such a powerful machine.”

“During their training, it’s always important to us to show our trainees exactly why we do all this. Of course, that works much better on an actual construction site than it does on paper.”

Boris Becker, Head of Vocational Training at Wirtgen

The Supporting Program:

In addition to the training on the construction site, there were numerous workshops where the trainees presented their own factories to one another, machine demonstrations by Hamm, and a guided tour of the compaction specialist’s entire factory.
