Efficient concrete road construction with inset slipform pavers in Thailand

The SP 64 enables the paving of high quality road surfaces within a very short space of time.

Two important infrastructure projects in Thailand requiring the paving of new concrete roads are currently being realised with state-of-the-art slipform paving technology. Two different projects with many similarities. The advantages are clear: the construction process is faster, the quality of the paved surface is very good and process reliability is consistently high. As no fixed moulds are required, the manual work required is considerably reduced.

Project Site 1 – Surat Thani

Precision over a distance of 22.3 kilometres: Construction contractor Premium Concrete is realising a road construction project with an overall length of 22.3 kilometres in Thailand’s Surat Thani province. The new section is a part of the important AH2 trunk road to Maluan.

Project Site 2 – Tha Sala

Optimised construction for heavy goods traffic: a further construction project is located between Tha Sala and Nopphitam on the section from Thai Bun to Nopphitam. The contractor CC Machinery & Construction Co. Ltd. is responsible for the upgrading of the 17-kilometre section of this important transport route.

Thicker lane construction for heavy goods traffic

As traffic drives on the left in Thailand, the left-hand lane tends to be used primarily by heavy goods vehicles. In view of this, it is being paved 3 cm thicker than the adjacent lane to cope with the additional stresses.

‘We decided to use the slipform paver because Wirtgen offers outstanding customer care, comprehensive service and training courses. These are particularly important criteria for us.’

Technology that sets standards

Both projects impressively demonstrate the outstanding performance of slipform pavers in contemporary road construction. The high paving speed, excellent surface evenness and the long service life of the roads assure outstanding cost effectiveness.

The two projects set new standards for efficient concrete road construction in Thailand and are a decisive step forward in the realisation of a sustainable transport infrastructure.

Inset slipform paver – efficient concrete road construction in a single pass

When paving with inset slipform pavers, the concrete is placed directly in front of the machine and distributed by a spreading auger or spreading plough. The wet concrete is homogeneously consolidated by vibrators while the slipform mould defines the form and dimensions. The integrated dowel bar and tie bar inserter places the reinforcement exactly as required. The oscillating beam smooths out smaller irregularities before the super smoother ensures a perfect surface finish.
