History

From industry pioneer to pace setter

For 100 years, BENNINGHOVEN has brought a spirit of innovation, backed by tradition, advanced technology, and a superbly skilled workforce to the pursuit of its business. The company has set trends in markets worldwide and is now a pace setter in the field of asphalt mixing plants.

In 1909, Otto Benninghoven formed BENNINGHOVEN in Hilden near Düsseldorf, Germany as a machine factory for the production of gearwheels. In the difficult post-war years, the company kept itself afloat by producing transmissions destined for use in the automotive industry in addition to gearwheels.

Otto Benninghoven

Company founder

The company moved into combustion technology in the early 1950s, first with small burners for residential and office buildings before shifting its focus to industrial burners. In the early 1960s, the company’s development of large burners for drying aggregates in the asphalt production industry laid the foundation for its transition to asphalt plants and the asphalt industry.

The burner was followed by dryer drums, bitumen systems, and machinery for producing mastic asphalt. In 1970, the steadily rising demand for products in BENNINGHOVEN quality made an expansion to its production facilities necessary, and a modern manufacturing plant was set up in Mülheim an der Mosel. The first asphalt mixing plant left the BENNINGHOVEN factory in 1986, starting BENNINGHOVEN’s success story as an industry innovator.

Significant expansion work was completed in Wittlich in 1990: Operations now started at a second location, equipped with state-of-the-art production equipment. BENNINGHOVEN celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009.

Today, the BENNINGHOVEN Group brings advanced technologies and a superbly skilled workforce to the pursuit of its business – the guarantors of its steady stream of innovations and customer-focused philosophy. Today, the pace setter in the field of asphalt mixing plants can look back on milestones such as hot-gas generator recycling technology, its integration into Wirtgen Group, and its move in 2018 to the world’s most modern factory for the production of asphalt mixing plants.

660 Years of Road Construction Experience

In 2021, the Wirtgen Group will celebrate 60 years of Wirtgen. Time to take a look back and a look ahead. Vögele, Hamm, Kleemann, and Benninghoven have also played a leading role in shaping the industry’s technologies.
