Purchasing Planner

Job Overview

The Purchasing Planner coordinates the procurement and distribution of materials, parts, equipment, and supplies for the organization.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates all activities related to purchase of materials, parts, equipment, and commodities beginning with intent to purchase through delivery.
  • Plans sequence of ordering and analyzes the requirements of the item, including preliminary specifications, preferred supplier, and date item is needed.
  • Solicits and evaluates proposals for the requested item.
  • Investigate and/or interviews with potential suppliers to determine if they meet the specified requirements.
  • Advises team members or management on the appropriate supplier to be used.
  • Negotiates the lowest possible cost for the item balanced against the optimum quality and schedule needs.
  • Prepares Purchase Orders/Implements purchase contracts that comply with company and government regulations.
  • Assures that the item is delivered on schedule, at the negotiated price, and meets the quality standards of the company.
  • Maintains timely control of orders, amendments, shipping notices, and other documents to ensure accurate retention of records.
  • Coordinates appropriate methods needed to distribute items in a cost-effective manner.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from four-year College or university; or equivalent combination of education or purchasing experience.
  • Familiarity with SAP is a plus.
  • Prior parts planning/purchasing experience helpful but not necessary


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and hear, required to frequently sit, stand; walk; gross hand and finger dexterity; occasionally reach outward with hands and arms; rarely climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently working in a conditioned office environment with commensurate noise levels, frequent sitting, occasional standing, and walking to navigate first and second level floors; fine hand-eye coordination and motor skills for keyboarding and manipulating papers and files. This position requires up to 25% travel a year.
