Sand, gravel, and topsoil are processed at the successful open-cast mine in Broad Brook, Connecticut from Pierce Builders. Thanks to two mobile screening plants from Kleemann, Pierce Builders delivers outstanding performance and excellent results. They efficiently prepare the material for the production of asphalt, concrete, and bedding sand.
Pierce Builders has been operating the sand and gravel pit in Broad Brook for more than two years. Owner Alescia Pierce manages production. As mining manager, she is supported by other women on the machines and within the organization. But Alescia Pierce doesn’t just manage the pit, she is also ready to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty.
At the heart of the operation are two mobile screening plants from Kleemann: the MOBISCREEN MSC 953 EVO classifying screening plant for producing sand, and the MSS 802 EVO coarse screening plant for screening topsoil and gravel. Originally, both plants were rented, but they ended up becoming permanent. Satisfaction was so high that additional Kleemann plants were purchased within a very short time. “We started with just one – and soon we had five, because of their amazing performance,” laughs Alescia Pierce. The screening plants are supplemented by MOBIBELT mobile stockpiling conveyors, which streamline construction site logistics and help boost productivity.

The MOBISCREEN MSS 802 EVO mobile coarse screening plant is mainly used for processing topsoil and gravel. Its performance and handling greatly impressed the boss: “I love the coarse screening machine. I have years of experience in screening topsoil – and then this screen from Kleemann comes along and the material just flows through.” Manual removal of root residues and clogged hoppers are a thing of the past – and for Alescia Pierce, the MSS 802 EVO is ‘the very best machine available for this purpose’.
The MOBISCREEN MSC 953 EVO classifying screen is used to produce sand for asphalt, concrete, and bedding material. Its key strength lies in its outstanding performance combined with ease of operation. Dry feed material can be processed at a rate of up to 3,000 tons per day, while the output for wet material is around 1,500 tons. Average daily fuel consumption is only around 40 gallons. Operation is conveniently carried out via a mobile control unit – the days of lever operation are over!
The plants are fed by John Deere wheel loaders and excavators. Three mobile Kleemann stacker conveyors assist with material discharge. “The stockpile conveyors save valuable time. The material piles don’t fill up as quickly – so that other tasks can be carried out on site with the wheel loader,” explains Alescia Pierce. When it comes to construction site logistics, the company goes for state-of-the-art technology. The John Deere Operations Center ensures smooth processes. The central platform for managing entire construction sites serves as an interface between operators and machines on the construction site and the office where site managers and dispatchers are located.
