A Team of Five Wirtgen Group Machines Rehabilitates Damaged Pavement on a Ring Road in Suzhou

In Suzhou, China, two milling machines, one road paver, and two tandem rollers rehabilitated damaged pavement on a section of the Fuyun Road within a single working day. The rehabilitation project was carried out by the highly maneuverable Wirtgen compact milling machine W 155 CFi and the high-performance half-meter class cold milling machine W 50 HRi in team with a Vögele SUPER 1680-3 Li road paver, and two HD series tandem rollers from Hamm. The perfectly coordinated interplay of the machines offered considerable savings potential in terms of costs as well as ecological benefits for the communal client.

Suzhou | China:

Founded over 2,500 years ago around 100 kilometers (62.14 mi) west of Shanghai, the city of Suzhou, a leading producer of silk until today, is a center for high-tech industries and is renowned for its countless picturesque canals, bridges and classical gardens. In March 2023, a section of the Fuyun Road, a ring road in the city of Suzhou, had to be rehabilitated due to severe damage in the form of potholes and fatigue cracking resulting from flexing of the asphalt pavement. For this project, the communal road construction authority decided to use Wirtgen Group machines that were specially developed for the needs of the Chinese market and impress with outstanding efficiency, long service life and simple, intuitive operating concepts.

Wirtgen Cold Milling Machines: Agile, Powerful and Cost-Efficient Performers

The rehabilitation project began with the removal of the damaged asphalt pavement by milling. The Wirtgen compact milling machine W 155 CFi with a milling width of 1.5 m (4.9 ft) impressed the paving crew with its high milling precision and exceptional maneuverabilty, even in tight spaces on the construction site.

At the same time, the costs played a decisive role for the communal client. Here, the machine impressed the client with its particularly low fuel consumption and easy transportability. The W 155 CFi was ideally complemented by the small milling machine W 50 HRi. This machine is extremely maneuverable and enables the milling of very tight radii with a minimum of only 32.5 cm (12.8 in). This makes it an ideal choice for milling in corners, around manhole covers or similar, which considerably reduces the proportion of manual work otherwise required. This machine also offers maximum milling performance with low fuel consumption.

Paving the Surface Layer with the New SUPER 1680-3 Li

Following this, the new Universal Class paver from Vögele laid down the new surface layer with a width of 4.5 m (14.8 ft) and a thickness of 4.8 cm (1.9 in). The SUPER 1680-3 Li was fitted with the AB 600 TV extending screed which assures high pre-compaction over paving widths of up to 8 m (26.25 ft).

The SUPER 1680-3 Li impressed with its high laydown rate of up to 800 t/h and optimal material feed: The material hopper can hold up to 15 t of asphalt mix and is designed to facilitate the supply of mix by all commonly used truck types in China. At the same time, wide, oscillating push-rollers that can be shifted forwards by 75 or 150 mm (2,95 or 5.91 in) ensure smooth feeding, even in bends.

The state-of-the-art drive system technology of the paver also played an important part in the minimization of emissions: together with smart electronic engine control, the effective exhaust emissions after-treatment with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) lead to a significant reduction of harmful emissions. Like all Dash 3 models, the paver is equipped with the Vögele EcoPlus low-emissions package which further reduces emissions and cuts fuel consumption by as much as 25%.

A New Generation of Tandem Rollers for Perfect Final

Two HD series tandem rollers then came into play to finish the job. With a compaction speed of 5.5 to 6 km/h (3.4 to 3.7 mph), the compact HD 138i VV was able to make the best of the limited time available for completion of the project. The dot on the “i” was provided by the little HD 50 VT with its vibrating roller drum and wheel-set: its pneumatic tires further compacted the asphalt pavement, which improved the surface sealing and assured an even surface.
