When it comes to sustainability, the Wirtgen Group has been setting standards for 35 years

Due to the rapid increase in heavy-duty transport, the global road network is showing visible signs of aging in many places. In order to ensure that the road infrastructure remains functional over the long term, roads are increasingly requiring structural rehabilitation. The continually increasing demands that must be fulfilled on road rehabilitation projects are identical around the world – cost-effectiveness, rapid completion and, ideally, environmental compatibility. All of which are demands that road construction contractors can fulfill with the cold recycling method and state-of-the-art machine technologies.

As a pioneer in this field, Wirtgen has decisively shaped the processes and technologies of cold recycling. With the new CR-series cold recyclers and the KMA 240(i) mobile cold recycling mixing plant, the company is setting entirely new standards again – as in the 1980s, when Wirtgen set the first milestone in cold recycling.

1986 – The Market Launch of the First Cold Recycler

The mid-eighties see the launch of the first machine capable of rehabilitating a road on its own in a single pass. The2000 VC-Rmills off the asphalt, processes it on the spot (in-place), adds precisely metered amounts of the binding agents required, and immediately repaves the road with the new cold mix it produces. With the launch of the2100 VC/DCcold milling machine, the cold recycler from 1986 is also revised and upgraded.It is soon followedby the2100 VCRat the beginning of 1989. It is later renamed as the2100 DCRin the course of the model upgrading program. Equipped with a combined spraying system for water and binding agents, the system can now draw the additives required for the job from its own integrated tanks or from a tanker truck or trailer. For the first time, the recycler also features an hydraulically-adjustable vario paving screed with a working width of up to three meters.

1995 – Wirtgen Develops and Build its First Wheeled Recycler, theWR 2500

With theWR 2500, Wirtgen offers road construction contractors a product for a very broad spectrum of applications. This ranges from soil stabilization and pulverization to the recycling of bound and unbound pavement structures. With a milling and mixing rotor working with both up-cut and down-cut processes, the machine offers a working width of close to2,400 mmand can mill steplessly to a depth of up to500 mm. Depending on the working depth, this produces varying volumes of material for the mixing process. As long ago as in the mid-nineties, the variable mixing chamber assures consistently high mix quality, even when processing large volumes of material.

1998 – The Mobile Cold Mixing Plant Rolls from Site to Site

In 1998, Wirtgen develops and builds the KMA 150, the first cold mixing plant for the cold in-plant recycling method. A decisive feature of the mixing plant is its mobility. The plant can be quickly and easily transported from site to site and is ready to run in a very short time. Its twin-shaft pugmill enables the production of a variety of cold mixes at a maximum output rate of150 t/h.

Much has happened in the cold recycling sector between the eighties and nineties and the present day. Wirtgen has continuously updated and refined the process and has constantly adapted it to fulfill the needs of today’s customers and increasingly strict environmental requirements. Today, the company offers the most innovative machines on the market for all working scenarios and is continuously advancing their state-of-the-art technologies.

2013 – Wirtgen Adds a New Member to the WR Family – theWR 200(i)

The compact wheeled recycler is suitable for both soil stabilization and cold recycling. Microprocessor-controlled spraying bars precisely dose the required amounts of water, foamed bitumen and bitumen emulsion into the mixing chamber. Together with the two other machines of the series, theWR 240(i)and theWR 250(i), the three wheeled recyclers cover the entire performance spectrum in the 2 m to2.5 mof the surface.

2018 – High-quality Recycling of Asphalt Layers with the New CR-Series of Cold Recyclers

Wirtgen sets new benchmark standards in the cold recycling of asphalt layers with the new tracked recyclers of the CR-series. While theW 240 CR(i)compact cold recycler with an integrated paving screed is best suited for the basic rehabilitation of roadways, the extremely high daily productivity of the powerfulW 380 CR(i)rear-loading cold recycler makes it ideal for the complete rehabilitation of very wide roadways.
