Wirtgen showcases new cold milling machine generation at NordBau 2015

Wirtgen GmbH, the specialist for milling machines, will be presenting two German premieres in Neumünster. The Small Milling Machine W 35 Ri and the Compact Milling Machine W 100 CFi are two highlights from the company's new cold milling machine generation – adding yet more innovative road rehabilitation solutions to Wirtgen's portfolio.

W 35 Ri: A cost-efficient all-rounder

Alongside classical small milling machine applications such as partial pavement rehabilitations, milling around manhole covers and the application and removal of road markings, the versatile milling machine is also perfect when paired with large milling machines. With its low weight, this easy-to-transport and highly mobile machine is an excellent and cost-effective option for small reworking applications. Thanks to its small turning radius in both the clockwise and the anticlockwise direction, fast maneuvers on the job site remain one of its many strengths.

High performance

Equipped with a 45-KW Deutz engine and the ultimate in eco-friendly engine technology in line with the latest emission standards, EU Stage 3b / US Tier 4 Final, the W 35 Ri boasts 7% more engine output. At the same time, three variably selectable milling drum speeds ensure a wide range of applications. As a result, milling jobs involving milling depths of up to 110 mm at a working width of 350 mm can be carried out quickly, efficiently and perfectly in line with the application. What is more, Wirtgen can also supply the smallest milling machine with a 500-mm milling drum on request.

Intuitive operation

Like the 50-cm and 1-m milling machines in Wirtgen's new generation of small and compact milling machines, the W 35 Ri is distinctively simple to operate. Based on a standardized operating concept encompassing all series, the smallest Wirtgen milling machine also permits operators to save up to three milling depths using the ergonomic multifunctional armrest on either side – a feature which is included as standard.

Another new feature is the integration of the Wirtgen machine management system WIDRIVE, which was previously only used in larger milling machines but now links the main machine functions on the W 35 Ri, too. As a result, such systems as the diesel engine control, travel drive, milling drum drive, water system or LEVEL PRO Plus are controlled centrally. This generally eliminates some 50% of the manual interventions the operator would previously have had to perform in order to control the machine and coordinate individual work steps during the milling process. For the first time ever, the leveling system LEVEL PRO PLUS is now also available for the smallest of Wirtgen's cold milling machines.

Variable operator's platform

The option of varying the operator's platform to include additional components enhances flexibility on the job site. In addition, the platform can now be moved down from its usual position over the machine in a few swift moves. Standing on a step behind the milling machine, the driver operates the W 35 Ri as usual using the steering wheel and the individually adjustable multi-functional armrest.

W 100 CFi: The crowning glory of the new compact class

The W 100 CFi is equipped with the most eco-friendly engine technology in compliance with EU Stage 4 / US Tier 4 Final and it features a multitude of valuable innovations. Together with the established Wirtgen features, they optimize the milling process, ensure immense flexibility in use and greatly simplify operation of the milling machine.

Unobstructed view

The chassis of the new W 100 CFi is distinctly narrower and affords the operator a better view to the front. In addition, the operator's platform can be hydraulically displaced 200 mm beyond the edge, thus providing a perfect view ahead of the milling drum assembly and onto the front right-hand crawler track. Thanks to the camera system, the left-hand milled edge or material discharge is always clearly visible to the machine operator on the high-resolution display.

Fast working

Highlights include the marked improvement in milling output by as much as 15% – a leap which is partly attributable to the higher output of the engine. Now rated at 350 HP, it still consumes very little fuel. Meanwhile, precise milled results are assured by Wirtgen's new proprietary leveling system, LEVEL PRO PLUS, which is fully integrated into the machine control system. The preset target milling depth is accurately controlled via robust displacement sensors located in the hydraulic cylinders which are mounted on the side plates. It is indicated on the high-resolution LEVEL PRO PLUS color display.

A host of new features allow the W 100 CFi to complete projects efficiently, such as rapid automatic swiveling of the rear right-hand crawler track without lowering the milling drum. The third position for the rear right-hand crawler track is also new. Outstanding maneuverability is additionally ensured by the automatic tracking function of the rear right-hand crawler track when swiveled inwards and the increased steering angle of the front axle. Even on difficult job sites, such as roundabouts or junctions, material can be loaded without difficulty thanks to the extremely large conveyor slewing angle of 60° to the left or right. For more precise loading, the machine operator can slew the conveyor at two different speeds.
