Complex paving in the mountains
A Vögele SUPER 1680 Li paver created the surface course of a mountain road in Yunnan province in South-West China.
Fengqing | China: Paving asphalt in mountainous regions is an especially demanding process, and this is also true of the project in Fengqing, near the town of Lincang, which involved a local contractor producing a 3 km section of a mountain road. In addition to numerous sharp bends, the project featured steep drops and inclines. It was here that the SUPER 1680 Li Universal Class paver paved a 4 cm-thick surface course varying in width between 3 and 6 m.
The versatile and powerful Universal Class paver
The versatile SUPER 1680 Li was fitted with the AB 480 TV Extending Screed; its sturdy material handling components, efficient material management and powerful drive, among other things, made it ideal for this demanding construction project in the mountains. The Universal Class tracked paver has a low-emission engine with an output of up to 123 kW and a laydown rate of up to 800 t/h. This gives the machine enough power even for projects like the one in Fengqing which involved paving uphill.
Especially low emissions
The SUPER 1680 Li is equipped with a powerful 4-cylinder diesel engine which is both low in emissions and economical in use. Pollutants are reduced to a significant extent by the effective exhaust emissions after-treatment involving a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) combined with an intelligent electronic engine control system. As a result, the Vögele Universal Class paver complies with the MEE IV emission standards and its name has “i” added to it; this stands for “intelligent emission control” and refers to environmentally-friendly engines in which the latest technology guarantees particularly low emissions.
Efficient material management with robust components
The paving team considered a further benefit to be the efficient material management of the SUPER 1680 Li. The large material hopper with a capacity of 15 t is designed to facilitate feeding by any common type of truck. The wide, oscillating push-rollers can be extended forward to ensure optimum feeding with material, even on bends. The large conveyor tunnel, proportional control of conveyors and the powerful augers ensured an optimum flow of material and even spreading in front of the screed. All material handling components on the SUPER 1680 Li are also designed to be especially robust; as a consequence, the paver is capable of processing abrasive materials such as gravel and cement-treated base (CTB), as well as the asphalt materials used in Fengqing, efficiently and with high quality.
High surface quality
In combination with the AB 480 Extending Screed and its compacting systems of tamper and vibrators (TV), the paver was able to achieve an optimum paving result despite the challenging terrain. The heated components of the screed made a significant contribution to this: all the parts in contact with the material are electrically heated, which stops material adhering and thus facilitates a particularly even surface structure. Vögele was one of the first manufacturers to develop screed heating decades ago, and has continued optimising it ever since.
