Energy-efficient working while protecting resources

The BENNINGHOVEN plant and its contributions to more energy-efficient and resource-saving production.

At the state-of-the-art production facility in Wittlich, BENNINGHOVEN manufactures long-lasting asphalt mixing plants and systems for maximising the volume of asphalt fed back into recycling process. Measures to reduce energy and resource consumption are already taken during the manufacturing of the plant components.

Using energy more efficiently

The BENNINGHOVEN plant in Wittlich, located between the Mosel river and the Eifel region in western Germany, is one of the most modern WIRTGEN GROUP factories and the world’s most modern production facility for asphalt mixing plants. This site stands out on account of its up-to-date, advanced processes and also thanks to its efficient handling of the renewable energies used. Every effort is made to protect soil, water and air from contamination.

Priority: continuous reduction of the CO₂ footprint

This starts with state-of-the-art building insulation. Ventilation systems for cooling and heating with integrated heat recovery guarantee high indoor air quality and deactivate automatically as soon as any windows are opened. 50.9% of the required electricity comes from renewable energies, The interior lighting is also designed as a smart system: Motion sensors ensure that there is light where and when needed. If someone enters a room, energy-saving LED systems regulate the level of illumination depending on the available daylight, while automated blinds activate in response to strong sunlight to avoid wasting energy on having to cool down the building again.

At BENNINGHOVEN, modern technologies and innovative ideas ensure that strict legal regulations are met or even overfulfilled.

One of our highlights: the powder-coating system

This pioneering surface treatment requires significantly smaller solvent quantities than conventional coating processes. BENNINGHOVEN now powder-coats around 90% of its parts.

Zero-litres production saves water

Drinking water is a precious resource and its responsible handling will continue to grow in importance. The BENNINGHOVEN production processes need no process water and therefore produce no industrial wastewater. Of course we still need water at BENNINGHOVEN – for our employees. All hot water is heated off-site.

More than just asphalt recycling

BENNINGHOVEN is known for its leading recycling technologies. Plant owners who use the hot gas generator combined with RPP series plants can currently achieve feed ratios of 90 + X%, depending on the general conditions and the underlying footprint assumptions. The RPP technology also prioritises the asphalt recycling material flow. BENNINGHOVEN plants with integrated hot gas generator technology are the RPP 3000 Plus, RPP 4000 and RPP 4000 Plus.

Thanks to asphalt recycling, reclaiming existing materials has been part of the company DNA at BENNINGHOVEN for decades. As a result, many items of production equipment were not simply disposed of during the relocation to the new factory. After reconditioning, the portal cranes are still in regular use at the new factory.

Almost all production waste is separated by type and remains in the materials cycle.

A good climate

Two innovative energy recovery ventilators keep the air clean throughout the site. This state-of-the-art technology processes waste air into fresh air while also recovering energy. In addition, the system keeps ambient air free of dust.

Another important contribution is made by the extraction system at our welding workstations.

A relaxed atmosphere

Various steps have been taken to create an environment that promotes concentrated, uninterrupted work, such as soundproofed windows and partitions to reduce noise in welding booths.

In office buildings, sound-absorbing flooring and suspended ceilings suppress ambient noise.

Safety is paramount

Safety is a top priority at the BENNINGHOVEN factory. Processes have been optimised to ensure that only a few forklifts are in operation at any one time. Additionally, the vehicles are equipped with a visual warning system: A blue spot of light warns of an approaching vehicle and therefore helps to avoid collisions – especially in areas with a restricted field of view.

Safety mirrors mounted at the front of warehouse racking systems also help to improve safety by allowing a look “around the corner’, i.e. into the narrow aisles, to also avoid accidents where personnel suddenly appear without warning.

Excellent ergonomics

Workspaces are designed according to ergonomic guidelines. In pre-fabrication, for example, grippers are used to help with lifting heavy parts during drum construction.

Mixer construction also uses electrical, height-adjustable access platforms and equipment as standard to provide easy access for employees.

Workstations are equipped with adjustable tables and chairs that can be easily reconfigured to suit individual needs and requirements.
