Replace quicker, work longer | Wirtgen cutting tool extractors

The new, practical cutting tool extractors from Wirtgen provide a significant increase in operator comfort. Their intelligent automatic features considerably facilitate the process of replacing cutting tools, which minimizes the time needed for replacement and therefore machine stoppages. Milling contractors can choose between a hydraulically assisted tool extractor with integrated drum turning device control and a battery-operated hydraulic tool extractor. A purely battery-operated hydraulic model of the tool extractor is additionally available for surface miners.

Two models for use with cold milling machines

The hydraulically assisted tool extractor offers the advantage that hydraulic power supply is directly provided by the machine’s hydraulic system. In addition, handling of the entire process of tool replacement by the machine operator is simplified significantly as the tool extractor enables direct control of the drum turning device. For this purpose, a button is integrated into the tool extractor enabling the milling drum to be conveniently rotated in both directions. Using this tool extractor with the new W 200 and W 210 large milling machine models enables cutting tools to be replaced and the milling drum to be turned even with the engine switched off. An average extraction time per cutting tool of less than two seconds was measured for this tool extractor model.

A hallmark of the battery-operated hydraulic tool extractor, on the other hand, is that it can be used independent of the machine’s range of equipment. The battery capacity is sufficient for the replacement of a full set of cutting tools mounted, for instance, on a milling drum with a working width of 2 m and a tool spacing of 15 mm. The scope of delivery comprises two batteries plus one charging station. This tool extractor has an average extraction time per tool of less than five seconds.

Easy handling and quick replacement without the level of effort previously required from the machine operator are also guaranteed when using the battery-operated hydraulic model of the Wirtgen tool extractors.

The pressing heads of both the hydraulically assisted and battery-operated hydraulic tool extractors are suitable for use with the HT3 and HT11 quick-change toolholder systems installed in the Wirtgen cold milling machines. The major benefit for machine operators resulting from the use of either tool extractor model is a significantly reduced amount of effort needed for extraction of the cutting tools.

On offer for surface miners

Practical tools to support machine maintenance procedures are also much sought-after in the mining industry to maintain the availability of the miners at the highest possible level during one work shift. To comply with this requirement, Wirtgen GmbH offers a hydraulic tool extractor model also for its range of surface miners, which is suitable for use with the HT14 and the new HT15 quick-change tool holder system. The tool extractor for miners offers the same advantages as its counterpart in the cold milling machine division. After securing the pressing head, the tool is extracted from the toolholder from the rear by means of a hydraulic cylinder.
