Intelligent solutions for asphalt and soil compaction

Roller manufacturer HAMM has come up with a host of innovations to present at CTT 2016: The highlight for asphalt construction are the articulated tandem rollers in the HD+ series and HD CompactLine. There is a genuine newcomer in the rubber-wheeled rollers segment: the GRW 280. The extensive portfolio is rounded off with the compactors in the 3000 series. These earth-work classics have been updated to meet the specific requirements of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. HAMM also features some innovations for the measurement and documentation technology area, because WITOS HCQ will allow data to be transferred directly from and to rollers in real time.

The tasks involved in road construction and earth work are becoming increasingly complex. At the same time, different climatic zones, locally proven construction methods and materials as well as legislation are resulting in marked regional differentiation in requirements. HAMM is ready for this challenge and is presenting the industry with an extremely diverse product programme tailored to the specific characteristics of the regional markets around the globe. Wherever in the world they may be, customers can rest assured: HAMM always has the right compaction technology. With HAMM compactors, tandem rollers and rubber-wheeled rollers, customers can undertake their tasks cost-effectively and to the highest standard because the machines feature numerous intelligent, tried and tested solutions. The most important HAMM innovations at CTT 2016 are:

  • HD+ series tandem rollers: modern classics
  • GRW 280 rubber-wheeled rollers: the new generation of rubber-wheeled rollers
  • 3000 series compactors: tried and tested classics remain part of the programme
  • WITOS HCQ: optimised process for compaction monitoring

Modern classics: HD+ series articulated tandem rollers

With 46 models ranging from 7 t to 14 t, the HD+ series of articulated tandem rollers from HAMM continues to dominate the market in asphalt construction.

HAMM has traditionally paid attention to maximum operator comfort and simple, unambiguous user guidance. The wealth of space in the XXL cab is remarkable. With a laterally adjustable and rotatable driver’s seat and powerful heater (option) that can also be complemented with air conditioning, if desired, a pleasant working environment in all weathers is assured.

Looking out from the XXL cab, drivers have an excellent view of the roller drum and water sprinkler. They also have a good overview of the surrounding area thanks to the excellent visibility – without intruding pillars – provided by the articulated tandem rollers with their compact design. At the same time, the operating console and display always remain in the field of view, being rigidly attached to the seat. Of course, HAMM also delivers the machines with ROPS roof or sunshield roof.

The HD+ series tandem rollers stand out for their ease of operation and perfect visibility.

The handling and compaction qualities of the new tandem rollers are also impressive, thanks in particular to their ideal weight distribution. Whether straights, slopes, bends or roundabouts: the machines quickly produce surfaces that are perfectly smooth. When reversing, the automatic transmission provides gentle acceleration and braking, playing its part in ensuring even asphalt layers without bulges or hollows. The large track offset means that the tandem rollers offer plenty of clearance for clean edge pressing.

GRW 280 rubber-wheeled rollers: the new generation of rubber-wheeled rollers

The GRW 280 stands out for its spacious operator’s platform with panoramic cabin and outstanding visibility, partly because of the asymmetric frame with sight channels. Another feature is the language-neutral operation. It makes work easier for drivers and ensures safe operation.

The intelligent ballasting concept of the GRW 280 rubber-wheeled rollers enables fast and optimum equipping of the machines, thus offering a great deal of flexibility on the construction site.

In addition, the most advanced rubber-wheeled roller in the world features easy handling, optimum weight distribution, a special suspension system with levelling feature and modern power train to provide the very best conditions for high-quality compaction.

The special feature is the intelligent ballasting concept. It enables modification to different operating weights in the user’s workshop or even on the construction site. Depending on the version delivered, this covers operating weights between 10 and 28 t.

The 3000 series compactors: tried and tested classics remain part of the programme

The 3000 series is a classic among compactors and continues to generate great interest worldwide. This is hardly surprising since the rollers are simple to operate and extremely versatile, come with high compaction power and an enormous climbing ability, and offer outstanding driving and handling characteristics thanks to the 3-point articulation.

The HAMM 3000 series compactors are genuine classics in the earth-work area. They combine a timeless, yet modern design with tried and tested technology (Tier 2 or Tier 3 engines) and ease of operation.

The HAMM 3000 series compactors are genuine classics in the earth-work area. They combine a timeless, yet modern design with tried and tested technology (Tier 2 or Tier 3 engines) and ease of operation.

HAMM has aimed this series above all at customers in countries with Stage II / Tier 2 and Stage III / Tier 3 exhaust emission standards, with options to match the requirements of these markets. They include a compactometer, a canopy and a fuel prefilter. A wide range of lighting, tyre and comfort versions are also available. Depending on the model, the engines of the compactors with operating weights of 10 t or more comply with the requirements of Stage II / Tier 2 or Stage IIIA / Tier 3. In particular, the Tier 2 models 3410 (10.7 t) and 3411 (11.4 t) have been modified slightly. From now on, they will offer more comfort and safety features than before in the standard version and be able to compact at full power in ambient temperatures of up to 50°C thanks to a modified cooling concept.

WITOS HCQ: optimised process for compaction monitoring

WITOS HCQ is a useful complement to the HCQ Navigator, HAMM’s versatile measurement and documentation system for compaction. In the basic version, the satellite-based system gathers all important compaction parameters and the progress of individual or multiple rollers during compaction. For this purpose, the HCQ Navigator generates a real-time “compaction map” allowing the areas which have already been adequately compacted and those which require further compaction to be identified at a glance. This enables the roller drivers to compact extremely efficiently and evenly.

The HCQ Navigator records the data during the process. Previously, this data was transferred on a USB stick to an office PC for data back-up at the end of a day or project section. With WITOS HCQ, this process step is now carried out via an online tool. This means that the data is also available online for the on-site office – even during compaction.

The data can also be transferred in the opposite direction: planners can prepare construction site data offline and supply it via WITOS HCQ. Moreover, the software is very easy to use. For example, the developers at HAMM took care to ensure that the most important functions can be called up with a single click. The advantages are obvious: there is no more need to use any USB sticks, while the data transfer becomes faster and more secure thanks to WITOS HCQ.
