Chrome steel blow bars: Made for durability and long life

Choosing the right blow bars for an impact crusher is important for ensuring the most economical and efficient crushing process. Blow bars are made from a variety of materials: manganese cast iron, martensitic steels, metal matrix composites and chrome steel. The latter are characterised by excellent resistance to wear.

The decisive factor for a highly-efficient and cost-effective crushing process is not the cost of the respective blow bars, but the choice of the right blow bars for the individual application. What material will be fed to the crusher, how big are the pieces and how much in the way of foreign material does it contain? Choosing the right blow bars ensures longer operational readiness of the impact crusher and reduces operating costs.

Kleemann blow bars: ideal materials for every crushing scenario

Four different materials have become established as industry standards in the production of blow bars:

  • Manganese hard steel – high toughness, recommended only for extremely coarse feed materials with low abrasiveness.
  • Martensitic steel – with martensitic structure. Lies between manganese and chrome steel in terms of hardness and toughness.
  • Metal matrix composite (MMC) – different kinds of steel in combination with a special type of ceramic.
  • Chrome steel – with chemically bound carbon (chromium carbide).

The ideal material for each particular crushing scenario: The harder the steel, the higher the resistance of the material to wear,. As a rule, however, this goes hand-in-hand with decreasing impact resistance.

Rotor - blow bar configuration

In general, rotors with three or four blow bars are used, depending on the application and impact crusher deployed. The rotors with four blow bars can be configured with two ‘high’ and two ‘low’ blow bars to broaden the spectrum of applications.

The lug on the C-shape blow bars enables them to be easily secured on the rotor.

This is made possible by a special manufacturing process: the chemically bound carbon in chrome steel ensures a hard matrix that delivers an ideal combination of high hardness and low toughness. Heat treatment with precisely defined parameters prevents the material from becoming brittle.

Long service life ensures cost-effectiveness

These properties make chrome steel blow bars the first choice for an enormous variety of applications: for example, when recycling building rubble, concrete or asphalt. Their advantages also come into play when crushing medium-hard abrasive natural stone such as river gravels.

Three to five times longer service life

Thanks to this, they offer a three to five times longer service life than conventional blow bars. This naturally has a positive effect on costs per tonne and, on the bottom line, delivers outstanding value for money. The only thing to watch out for is that no large pieces of uncrushable materials such as manhole covers are fed into the crusher, as this increases the risk of breakage of the chrome steel blow bars.’
