Roundabouts have become an integral part of the street scene in many countries around the world. In Germany, they had been long forgotten, but now urban developers are increasingly banking on this type of round, “traffic-light-free” crossroads – not least because they can help to reduce the number of accidents and traffic jams. In the small southern German town of Achern, a “normal” crossroad was to be converted into a roundabout – a job that allowed the powerful wheeled Super 1803-2 paver from Vögele to demonstrate its many skills.
It may be cumbersome for the paver having to push a supply truck all the time when paving in tight bends. The powerful road paver of the dash-2 generation is therefore equipped with a particularly large receiving hopper. A supply of 13 tons of mix dispensed with the need for pushing a truck on most sections of the Achern job site, allowing the paver operator to fully concentrate on paving the 4.7 m wide pavement in the roundabout. The wheeled paver Super 1803-2 from Vögele enabled the paving gang to complete the 360-degree bend quickly and without difficulty.
The high paving capacity and excellent manoeuvrability of Vögele’s Super 1803-2 paver are much in demand in particular in roundabout construction. This is confirmed by the foreman, “The wheeled Vögele paver makes it very easy for us to do our job, as the project in Achern has clearly shown.
The client was highly satisfied with the quality produced and the fast work of both the gang and the machine. Paving of the 4 cm asphalt surface course on the 1,200 m² large circular lane, and on the tie-ins of the streets branching off from the roundabout was completed in a single day.
