KNOW-HOW

Battle name “The Big Beast”

Daily production rates of cold milling machines

Because of their colossal shape, large milling machines are often nicknamed “The Big Beast”. But how much material per hour can cold milling machines actually mill off and load? The performance of a cold milling machine is influenced by a number of factors. It depends, for instance, on the working width, spacing of the cutting tools and milling depth. Milling hard concrete takes more than twice as long as milling asphalt. The number of trucks available for transporting the milled material from site has an effect on the production rate as well.

Up to 500 m³ of milled material per hour

Under optimum conditions, high-performance milling machines like the W 2200 cold milling machine from Wirtgen are capable of achieving production rates of up to 500 m³ of asphalt per hour. This is equivalent to as many as 38 truck loads of 30 tons each which are loaded in just one hour. Eight hours of continuous high-performance milling at a milling width of 2,200 mm and milling depth of 30 cm result in a total milled area of impressive 13,000 m² in size.
