Single-drum compactors equipped with padfoot drums are used in soil construction and for cold recycling. Padfoot drums are, in fact, smooth drums with additional, 80 mm to 100 mm high studs of trapezoidal shape welded onto the drum.
Padfoot drums are used for compacting cohesive and stony soils. Combined with vibration, they have a kneading and pounding effect that roughens the surface to be compacted. The pores in the soil are reduced, and pieces of soft rock are broken into smaller-sized material.
Padfoot drums are eminently suitable for compacting cohesive soils or mixed soils with high water content. The impressions left behind in the soil increase the total surface, accelerating the drying process. Reducing the water content improves the bearing capacity.
Deep-treaded tractor tyres help to ensure optimum traction, in particular when compacting extremely wet soils. Special rock tyres guarantee progress on extremely stony ground.
